Sawtry lies on Ermine Street, the main Roman military road between London and York, 9½ miles NNW of Godmanchester. A small inscribed stone has been recorded in the R.I.B.. The text of this stone reads PVBLIC (RIB 230), which is not the most useful of epigraphic evidences.
