The Orton Staunch farmstead is situated less than ¼ mile (c.300m) south-east of the Roman vexillation fortress at Longthorpe. There is another substantial Romano-British building nearby at Orton Longueville (TL1795).
The site comprises two sub-rectangular enclosures with an associated droveway to the east. These ditches were sectioned in 1970 and were found to have been originally cut in the Iron-Age, measuring roughly 9 feet (2.8m) wide and 7 feet (2.1m) deep. The site went out of use for a short period when the Longthorpe fortress was garrisoned, to be re-occupied during the latter part of the 1st century, presumably after the Roman military had moved on. At this time the ditches were re-cut, the easternmost ditch was filled-in during the late-2nd century and the farmstead continued to be occupied into the 4th.
