| NY704656 | (110 x 175 m) | (1.7 ha) | This rectangular camp has four gateways, all protected by internal clavicula defences, positioned in the centre of the shorter east and west sides, and off-set to the east on the longer north and south sides (ratio 1:2); the camp therefore faced east. The camp is most unusual in that it is surrounded by an extra outwork which closely encompasses the entire perimeter about 11 yards (10m) outside the primary defences; outworks of this nature are recorded outside many forts in Britain but are unique in this instance in association with a nominally temporary encampment; this is likely evidence that the camp was used for more than just a single campaign season. |
