Barkway lies some 6½ miles north of the Braughing Roman settlement along the River Quin in Hertfordshire. There are three Latin texts recorded in the R.I.B. for th Barkway area, all found in 1744 with other Roman items in a chalk-pit at Rookery Wood, ¾-mile west of Barkway. The inscribed items were all votive in nature, dedicated to various gods, and now all reside in the British Museum in London. They are a silver-gilt bronze plaque depicting a shrine of Mars (RIB 218, vide supra), a silver ansate plate dedicated to a Romano-Celtic war-god (RIB 219, vide infra), and a silver leaf depicting a shrine of Vulcan (RIB 220, etiam infra).
