Servius Galba Imperator Caesar Augustus (68-69)

GALBA
Born: BC3/12/24 Servius Sulpicius Galba. Between Terracina and Fundi.
Father: (Servius) Galba (cos. AD22; short of stature and hunch-backed.) [Suet. Galba III.4].
Mother: Mummia Achaica (granddaughter of Catulus and great-granddaughter of Lucius Mummius who destroyed Corinth). [Suet. Galba III.4].
Emperor: AD68/06/09 Servius Galba Imperator Caesar Augustus.
Died: AD69/01/15 murdered by cavalrymen, beside the Curian Pool near the Forum in Rome.
History:
  • AD2 (ish) Adopted by stepmother, Livia Ocellina; takes name Lucius Livius Ocella Sulpicius Galba. [Suet. Galba IV.1]
  • AD7 (ish) When still a boy he called upon Augustus to pay his respects with others of his age, and the aged emperor pinched his cheek and said in Greek; "Thou too, child, will have a nibble at this power of mine." [Suet. Galba IV.1]
  • ? Galba marries wife, Aemilia Lepida (2 sons, names unknown)
  • c. AD40 Commanded Caligula's armies in Upper Germany
  • AD50's Favourite of Claudius but disliked by Agrippina
  • AD49 retired from public service
  • AD59 made governor of Hispania Tarraconensis after death of Agrippina
  • AD68 (Mar.) Julius Vindex, governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, rebels against Nero
  • AD68 (Apr.) Galba proclaimed emperor at Carthago Nova
  • AD68 (May) Vindex defeated by Rhine legions at Vesontio; Rhine legions commander Verginius Rufus refuses emperorship
  • AD68 (Jun.) Nero commits Suicide; Galba recognised by senate
  • AD68 (Oct.) Galba arrives at Rome
  • AD68 (Dec.) Vitellius made commander in Lower Germany by senate
