Roman-Britain.ORG (RBO) is an amateur archaeological web-site built, tested and maintained by Togodumnus (alias Kevan W. White), an ex-mainframe computer programmer now living with his two children in the 'Heart of England'.
The core of RBO is a collection of "clickable" Maps of Roman Britain, based on the Ordnance Survey Historical Map and Guide - Roman Britain, published by the O.S. (ISBN: 0-319-29027-1; depicted on right). This map shows all of the known Roman road network and all of the military, civilian and industrial sites in Roman Britain. The map is double-sided, with the southern half of Britain (most of England and all of Wales) on the obverse, and northern Britain (the north of England and all of Scotland) including Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall on the reverse.
The RBO website now provides information about almost every Roman settlement, fort, camp and quarry in the entire British Isles. There are separate sections covering Hadrian's Wall, the Antonine Wall, the Military Campaigns and the Roman Governors who conducted them, separate pages on each individual Roman Legion, every Cavalry Alae, all Auxiliary Cohorts and Irregular Forces, other pages on Romano-British History, Geography and extracts from Classical Works, also separate pages for each of the Celtic Tribes of Britain.
From the initial forays of Julius Caesar into Cantium (Kent) in 55/54BC, to the beginning of the fifth century AD, when Emperor Honorius informed Britannia that she must defend herself. RBO thus covers a chronological time-span of around half a millenium.
Each major Roman site in Britain will have a separate page or entry in the RBO database. This includes;
Many pages in RBO are accessible through a number of clickable maps of Roman Britain. These maps show either the whole of Roman Britain, or else a 100km x 100km square area, as designated by the Ordnance Survey National Grid Reference system. The clickable maps in RBO require the use of a layer-capable browser, but all of the locations in RBO are also available through a series of text-indices for those using less-sophisticated browsers.
RBO has been tested using Netscape Communicator 4.7 and Internet Explorer 4. Also retro-tested in IE 2.0

Since being made redundant in 1999 I have spent most of my spare time re-organising and re-writing my notes on Roman Britain. HTML was chosen to format the documents, mainly due to its similarity to the Document Composition Facility (DCF) on the IBM mainframe, but also because of my innate abhorrance of the popular word-processing packages, which wrap too much invisible formatting around the actual text. I must admit that when the project was started my expectation was to find other employment within weeks, but as time has progressed and nothing has been forthcoming, I have spent more and more of my spare time reading and writing about Roman Britain, and the RBO Website has evolved over the months into a massive project.
