Salvete Comites!
And a hearty welcome from your muscular, sun-bronzed, hirsute excavating machine, recently returned from his first training dig with the University of Birmingham. To all those people with whom I shared a dusty campsite in the south of France, I bid a fond hello! Adding that the technological jiggery-pokery is complete and the incriminating evidence is all located in our special place as arranged. Say no more!
I must apologise to all those who have sent in E-Mails with suggestions, corrections or queries and have not yet received a reply. I always endeavour to answer all correspondence as soon as it is read, unless research is required in the Uni. library, in which case I usually reply to this effect, adding that one cannot always find the answers straight away and there may be some considerable delay in my response. It has occurred to me, however, that there is always the possibility - especially considering the torrents of unsolicited "spam" which keeps on appearing with irksome regularity in my InBox - that your E-Mail to RBO may have been deleted by mistake. If you have not received a reply to your query, I would respectfully suggest that you re-submit it, verbatim.
I must also apologize to all AOL users for my inability to reply to their queries. I have tried to send replies to several people requesting information, in a variety of formats, but all mail is consistently returned "undeliverable" by the AOL Mail Server. So, if you're out there using bloody America On-Line I'll be obliged if you would send a few E-Mails of dissent to your service provider, and, if you require a response to your E-Mail to RBO, in the meantime, resubmit your queries/suggestions using alternative E-Mail addresses. Sorry folks!
Valete!

Salvete Comites!
Just a quick note to say that; a.) the RBO domain name registration and webspace rental have just been extended for another twelve months, and b.) having said that, there will be no updates to the RBO web-site for the next few weeks as I am off on my first training dig with the University of Birmingham. The jolly Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity is sending me - plus nineteen other students and eight lecturers - off to Eauze in the Bas-Armagnac district of southern France. There we will accompany a similarly-sized team of French students and staff from the Institut National de Recherches en Archéologie Préventive in the excavation of a palatial town-house of the Civitas Elusatium, the former administrative capital of the Novempopulana region of the Roman province of Aquitania.
I can envision the scene, kneeling in the bottom of a sondage, drop-forged pointing trowel in hand, beads of perspiration on furrowed brow, the expectation of uncovering something Romano-Gallic that no-one has seen for almost two-thousand years. Ahhh! Just think of it. Aside from the omnipresent feeling of being 'johnny-foreigner' along with the stifling heat and the bothersome dryoptera will be the excitement of an unfamiliar and glamorous location, the thrill of archaeological discovery, the golden sun, the azure sky, the Gallic atmosphere, the famous French quisine, the frolicsome French fillies, the local Armagnac! Lord have mercy!
Valete!

BBC Midlands Today, Wednesday 10th October 2001 An extensive Roman villa has been discovered at Childs Wickham in Worcestershire. The villa lay at the nucleus of a large settlement which supported hundreds of people, many of which worked in outlying farms producing grain for the Roman army. Evidence suggests that the villa's buildings may have been burnt down sometime during the fourth century. The villa was discovered by contractors working for Severn Trent Water Authority whilst digging a pipeline trench. With evidence dating from the Bronze-Age, a settlement may have existed on the site for a period of over 2,500 years. Archaeological "rescue digs" conducted on the site have so far cost £100,000, paid for by Severn Trent.

Last quarter RBO ventured north of the border for the first time with the release of the Hadrian's Wall pages. This is the second northern Britain supplement, which now has pages for every Romano-British site identified by a Roman name. The next installment will most-likely be the Antonine Wall, followed by the Gask Ridge and the other Scottish outpost forts.
New geographical indices based on the British sections of two of the classical geographies. The only one left now is the Tabula Peutingeriana, as soon as I've located the text, I'll suss-out the RBO page.
Now the first section of Auxilia out of the way. I'll be sorting out the next installment: Infantry Cohortes, sometime in the Spring.
Every place having a Latin name in Britain now has a separate page in RBO. Admittedly, some pages do not contain a lot of detail, but if you want to see how the whole of RBO will look in the future, take a gander at the sites north-of the border. These pages are approaching the depth of detail I am aiming for.

During the Summer my son Dan and I attempted to walk the length of Hadrian's Wall taking photographs for the new RBO section along the route. The expedition was curtailed just over half-way through, due to our camp site on the bank of the River North Tyne being flooded one night, an incident which unfortunately also affected the camera we took with us, with the result that many pictures were ruined.
The Hadrian's Wall expedition will be re-attempted next year, this time equipped with a waterproof camera-case and probably augmented by another bloody idiot intrepid walker, my mate Clive. In the meantime, the RBO Hadrian's Wall section is sadly devoid of photographs in the western half, but there are many plans, maps, drawings and inscriptions available.
