Back to Cohors I Vangionum Forth to Cohors II Vasconum CR

The First Cohort of Faithful Vardulli, citizens of Rome, part-mounted, one-thousand strong

The Vardulli or Varduli tribe inhabited Hispania Terraconensis, the area now known as Guipuscoa in northern Spain. The First Cohort of Vardulli are attested at several forts in the north of Britain; there are undated inscriptions at Corbridge in Northumberland on the old Stanegate frontier, also at milecastle 19 on Hadrian's Wall nearby, and at Cappuck in the Borders region of Scotland on Dere Street. They are positively placed at Castlecary in the Central region around AD138-61 on the Antonine Wall, at Lanchester in County Durham c.AD175-8 and at High Rochester, also on Dere Street in Northumberland in AD216.
