The First Cohort of Alpini

This unit was recruited from among the mountain-dwelling tribes of the Italian Alps, between the provinces of Cisalpine (Italian) and Transalpine (French) Gaul. They are mentioned only on military diplomata or discharge certificates, both dated to the first quarter of the second century; the first in the governorship of Lucius Neratius Marcellus and the other during the administration of Aulus Platorius Nepos.
