This page is intended as a short guide to the visible remains of Hadrian's Wall. Substantial web-pages on all of the Wall fortifications and some of the forts to the rear of the Wall on the Stanegate are available through the place-name links in the left-hand column. The more important remains of the Wall's superstructure, defenses, milecastles and turrets, the Vallum earthworks, also the Temporary Marching Camps associated with the Wall, have separate pages linked from the second column. All other visible remains are documented here, on this page, in photographs taken during Wall-Walks in August 2000, September 2005 and June 2011.
The Notitia Dignitatum lists the garrison forts on the Wall from east to west and this tradition has continued in modern works, indeed, the milecastles and turrets along the Wall are nowadays numbered from east to west. RBO will not break with this tradition, starting from South Shields at the mouth of the River Tyne and travelling westwards along the Wall to Bowness on the Solway Estuary.
All places on this page are depicted on the indispensible Ordnance Survey Historical Map and Guide - Hadrian's Wall (Crown copyright 1989). The sites between the two horizontal bars in the following table are shown on the Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure Map #43 - Hadrian's Wall Haltwhistle & Hexham (Crown copyright 1997; revised 1998).
The advertising shown on this page is meant to help people plan their own itinerary, especially if they intend to walk along the line of the Wall or follow the Hadrian's Wall Path. If you have an aversion to unsolicited advertisments they may be switched on/off by using the buttons below.

The original reason for compiling this information was as a prelude to walking along the length of the wall with my son Daniel in 2000. Since then the page has been rewritten a few times, inserting more links to new pages within the RBO web-site, including the StreetMap links, also vetting a number of external links to the hotels, public-houses, B&Bs, and camp-sites along the way.
I have chosen not to include any external links for places in Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Carlisle, due to the profusion of information already available elsewhere on the internet. Outside of these two cities at each end of the Wall, only those establishments which lie on or close to the line of the Wall have been included.
I have also chosen to stick to the line of the Wall itself, not the route taken by the Hadrian's Wall National Footpath, which starts at the Wallsend fort as one would expect but then follows the convolutions of the River Tyne and does not actually touch the line of the Hadrianic barrier until Heddon-on-the-Wall and Mile Castle 12, thereby missing out on the visible remains of the Wall and Vallum at Benwell, Denton, Walbottle and Heddon itself. The official path does not, however, deprive the Walker of the opportunity to visit the Great North Museum in Newcastle city centre.
I hope that people in cyberland find the information gathered on this page useful, particularly those who are planning to gain their Hadrian's Wall Walk Badge.
