Iron-Age Hillfort

This fort was defended on the north and west sides by steep sea cliffs, by a single rampart and ditch on the steep south side, and on the level east side by 2 stone ramparts - still over 3m high - and 5 ditches. The interior has over 100 rock-cut storage-pits, of which 18 contained human skeletons. In all, the remains of around 100 people have been found, some showing signs of having met with a violent end - such as sword cuts to the skull, which may indicate that the fort was attacked, either by Belgic raiders or by the Romans.
