Many astronomical calculations require points in time to be represented in Julian Date Notation, the Date/Time Panel provides functions that allow the calculation of Julian Dates and to convert dates between several astronomical date systems, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), Greenwich [Mean] Sidereal Time (GST), and Decimal Hours or Degrees. The current date and time values also, which were initially set when the page was opened, may be reset here.
Displayed on this panel but not accessible are the values for the obliquity of the ecliptic or the axial tilt of the Earth (EPS) which varies according to the date, and the Local Sidereal Time (LST) which is connected to Hour Angle and Geographical Location.
The Geographical Parameters Panel allows the user to control the geographical viewpoint on the Earth's surface by specifying latitude, longitude and height above sea-level. Alternately, one of several pre-programmed locations may be selected.
Also available on this panel is the option to adjust an objects coordinates, taking into effect the refractive index of the Earth's atmosphere. The parameters required for this calculation are air pressure and temperature which are also input on this panel.
The Object Selection Panel enables the user to enter an object's positional data in the Equatorial coordinate system, or alternately to select from one of many pre-programmed objects, such as the sun, moon and planets, the brightest stars, and several 'deep-sky' objects. Other functions activated from this panel include the ability to account for the precession of the equinoxes to adjust coordinates to a specified epoch, and to calculate the approximate rising and setting times of an object.
The Coordinate Conversion Panel allows you to convert between the four major astronomical coordinate systems; Equatorial, Horizon, Ecliptic and Galactic. This is achieved by using the Equatorial system as a mediator. Also displayed on this panel is Hour Angle which is linked to Local Sidereal Time and Geographical Location.
The Result Display Panel is used to display rising and setting times, planetary data and various other combined results.
